Risk Minimization
Marketing is tough, even when you know what you are doing. If you don’t know what you are doing, you can be in for a long, hard, expensive ride.  The next time you run across somebody who tells you marketing is easy, run the other way. It’s like any other investment: the more you invest, the more you stand to gain or lose.  It’s an area where there is little margin for error.  It is particularly precarious for the small businesses that don't have the luxury of rebounding from a substantial financial loss.   That’s why we operate from a principle of “risk minimization”. 

People, Not Products
The quickest marketing test any business can give itself is to ask the question “who will be using my product?” If you can’t answer that question without a committee, you should hang onto your day job. Rather than trying to sell a product that you must create a market for, why not take a harder look at the needs and wants of existing markets.  It’s the old “find a need and fill it” approach.

By applying marketing basics like "the 4 P's of marketing" (product, price, promotion and place), you will realize that the Internet is a place, or what some of us call a "distribution channel". By keeping the Internet in perspective, you are less likely to find yourself out on a ledge a year from now.
